STYLE OF WORK: Print making & oil painting
STUDIO LOCATION: Haselbury Plucknett, Somerset
The landscape of the West Country is depicted in Jane’s etchings, prints and paintings. Allowing her memory to dictate the course her pieces take, relying on ‘mind shots’ she explores the edges of reality with any landscape being part real and part dreamt in her minds eye. The vibrant colours, big skies and urge to explore all stand out clearly in her work.
Growing up in South Devon and spending a great deal of time out-doors seems to have encouraged Jane’s art to travel in a particular direction. Here in her own words she explains the importance of creativity in her life – “I spent most of my childhood building dens on beaches and have a lasting connection with the seaside. I clearly remember how I loved the colours, the seasons and the big skies. The freedom to run against the wind on an empty beach is entrenched in my emotional memory. When I am painting and looking for expansion in my work, I often visualise those carefree times of innocence. Modern life can crush the soul and creativity reminds me that I have one. ”
Jane opens her studio to Somerset Art Weeks (SAW) each year and in between times it’s possible to arrange a visit by prior arrangement and if you’re lucky get a cup of tea with Jane as she works. It was twice voted the SAW visitors choice (2012 & 2013), so given the hundreds of venues open during SAW, it’ll be well worth a visit.
