Sugar Cube Exhibition # 12 – David Smith
Hot on the heels of Barry and Lizzie’s ‘Inky Misdemeanours’ exhibition in our little gallery – ‘The Sugar Cube’, comes an exhibition of abstract work by the Bridport based artist David Smith.
The exhibition opened back in early November and runs until 21st December giving you plenty of time to come on up to Bowdens Farm to see what Somerset’s smallest gallery has on show.
The long nights and short days suit the stark minimalism of David’s work perfectly. Outside in the fields surrounding Bowdens Farm, the bare trees, grey skies and misty days are occasionally swapped for rich blue skies and bright sunshine. Inside in the Sugar Cube splashes of colour in the ‘Circle’ series of pictures mix with the skeletal leaves and the wind blown ‘Solid’ collage series. David has also hung four utterly mesmerising pictures in the corridor leading off the Sugar Cube. In these he uses lines, colour, shade definition to powerful effect.
David’s exhibition is the first to benefit from the lovely soft light that now bathes the pictures thanks to the new ceiling mounted lights and boy have they made a difference. No more lugging photography lights around on dull days but instead we can let the spotlights do the hard work (and a far better job they do too).
You can discover more about David by reading our interview on the Sugar Cube website with him or track him down on Twitter (details in the profile page). For a busy artist like David, this is a great way to keep tabs on what he’s up to and where his work is on show.
The Sugar Cube gallery is open Monday to Friday and we welcome visitors throughout the day. Barry and Lizzie have set up a shop page on the Sugar Cube website selling their print work and Christmas cards and cards for all occassions. Plenty of Christmas present ideas…
David’s exhibition marks the end of another year for our little Sugar Cube and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the artists and visitors for supporting us through another year. For the first time ever our programme of exhibitions over the coming year was fully booked back in October. Quite a feat for the little gallery that started life as a pop up!
The next exhibition (no. 13) is by Caron & Gordon Coldwell and this opens in early January 2017. Caron has a number of pieces currently on show at the Ilminster Arts Centre so if you want to get ahead of the crowd then why not pop down there for a taste of what’s to come.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all of us at Teapot Creative – the home of the Sugar Cube Gallery.
